Pooja was born and brought up in Delhi. She belongs to a Kashmiri Hindu family. Shali is a Kashmiri word which means silk.

Pooja has completed her B. A. from Delhi University and M. A. from Jamia Milia Islamia.

She had started her career in journalism with ANI in 2009. Two years later, she joined Times Now, which was then the number one news network of India. Times Now had given her a distinct identity. Unfortunately, the mistake with Sarvjeet Singh also brought lots of negative posts on her on Twitter and Facebook. She is currently working with Aaj Tak News Network, where she does reporting for both Aaj Tak in Hindi and India Today in English.

Pooja is known for her deep understanding of Kashmiri issues. In fact, she has gotten many awards for the same. She has never showed even a modicum of bias against Kashmiri Muslim just because of the fact that she belongs to a family of Kashmiri refugee. For her extensive Kashmir reportage, she won ENBA Award, 2019.

The case of Sarvjeet has become a case study for the Indian media. Arnab Goswami had called him a potential rapist, while Pooja had done one of the worst in camera interviews of an alleged sexual molester on camera. Sarvjeet has turned out to be an innocent. The DU student who had filed FIR had left the country after giving electoral points to AAP. The ordeal of Sarvjeet Singh is quite painful and Pooja Shali will have to take the large part of blame for ruining the life of a young man. As a matter of fact, only Rajdeep Sardesai and Rohini Singh had supported Sarvjeet at that time. All other media personalities had called him a pervert. But, that interview of Pooja will give shiver to Indians for long - the worst kind of journalism you can imagine.
