Manivannan Ponnaia is a Karnataka cadre IAS officer. He had created a revolution in good governance as the Principal Secretary to the Labour Department and IPR (Information and Public Relation) Department. He was applauded for handling the labour side problem generated by COVID-19 pandemic in a very efficient manner.

Manivannan was recently transferred out of Labour department. The decision has shocked observers as Mani has always been considered a highly efficient and upright officer. He was handling everything in a credible manner, including migrant labour problems. He was also maintaining a direct contact with citizens on various facets of COVID-19.

A letter of Karnataka Employer's Association (KEA) has gone viral. In this letter, the President of KEA can be seen bluntly asking the Government to remove Manivannan from the Labour Department. It was Mani's order of 13th April in which he had ordered all firm to not remove any employees and not even cut salary during the lock down phase.

M. Maheshwar Rao has succeeded Mani as per latest notification issued by the Karnataka Government.
Manivannan has now been appointed as the Principal Secretary, Animal Husbandry Department to the Government of Karnataka.
He was a 1998 batch IAS officer.
After completing engineering, Mani had worked with SAIL for two years. He was posted at Bokaro Steel Plant in Bihar (now, Jharkhand).
His name has also popped up in the ugly battle between Rohini Sindhuri and Roopa Moudgil. In a leaked audio conversation, Roopa can be heard asking Gangaram how Manivannan helped Rohini in a settlement with JDS MLA Sa Ra Mahesh.
