Upandra was born on 4^th September, 1983 in Dhanbad. He has done schooling from the prestigious DeNobili school in Dhanbad. Due to the transfer of his father, he had to shift to Vadorada from where he had completed 12^th. He had become a TTE after completing 12^th in 1999. Fortunately, he decided to not join and rather took admission in M S University Vododara for B. Tech.

After completing B. Tech. in Mechanical Engineering, Upendra joined L&T and later worked with NTPC as Executive Engineer. Few years later, he decided to go for UPSC IES examination and cracked in his very first attempt. The hunger for more success didn’t satisfied and the next target for Upendra was Civil Services Examination. He cracked UPSC CSE in his very first attempt in 2008, securing All India Rank of 125.
