Iqbal Singh Chahal is a 1989 batch IAS officer of Maharashtra cadre. He is currently the Commissioner of BMC – Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

Biography/Wiki

Iqbal Singh Chahal has succeeded the maverick IAS officer Praveen Pardeshi as the Commissioner of BMC. Mr. Pardeshi was removed without citing any reason. However, it is believed that as per Government assessment he was not able to control the spread of COVID – 19 in Mumbai. Those were early days of pandemic. The CM had given Iqbal a free hand to control the pandemic without concealing any data - be it number of cases or death. And, needless to say, what Iqbal has done marvelous job. Mumbai has become a model for containing Covid - 19 throughout the world. The Mumbai model has also helped Government of India and devising a proper strategy in the second wave.

Iqbal Singh Chahal is considered close to NCP and Congress. He was on the Central deputation during the UPA time.

Iqbal Singh Chahal had worked as the CEO of Dharavi Redevelopment Project. The situation of Covid - 19 has improved quite surprisingly in Dharavi, and Mr. Chahal is being credited for the same.
He is a fitness freak and has taken part in Mumbai Marathon since 2004.
He has been severely criticized for towing the line of the MVA Government in hounding Kangana Ranaut. BMC under his leadership had started to demolish the office of Kangana after giving her a very short notice. The Bombay High Court had ordered the BMC to stop the demolition. The episode will be remembered as a black spot on the career of Iqbal Singh.
Iqbal Singh Chahal has also made a successful model in managing Medical Oxygen in the Covid pandemic.
